Background of the Study
Pragmatic competence—the ability to use language appropriately in social contexts—is a critical component of language development among children. In Enugu, primary school children are exposed to Igbo language instruction through both formal education and community interactions. Pragmatic competence in Igbo includes understanding context-specific language use, managing conversational turn-taking, and employing culturally appropriate greetings and expressions (Nwankwo, 2023). Classroom activities, storytelling, and peer interactions provide fertile ground for developing these skills. However, factors such as curriculum design, teacher proficiency, and exposure to digital media can significantly influence the development of pragmatic competence. The early acquisition of pragmatic skills not only aids academic performance but also supports effective social interaction and cultural identity formation. This study investigates how pragmatic competence in Igbo develops among primary school children in Enugu by analyzing classroom discourse, teacher-student interactions, and informal peer conversations, aiming to identify the factors that facilitate or hinder effective language use in early education.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of pragmatic competence in language development, primary school children in Enugu may not receive sufficient support to develop these skills in Igbo (Nwankwo, 2023). Curricular limitations and varying teaching methodologies may lead to gaps in pragmatic language use, resulting in communication difficulties and reduced cultural engagement. Additionally, the influence of digital media might overshadow traditional interactive practices, further hindering the development of culturally specific pragmatic markers. Comprehensive research is needed to evaluate these factors and to propose interventions that can enhance pragmatic competence among young learners.

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the level of pragmatic competence in Igbo among primary school children.

  • To identify factors influencing pragmatic development.

  • To propose strategies to improve language use in early education.

Research Questions

  • What is the current level of pragmatic competence in Igbo among primary school children?

  • What factors contribute to effective pragmatic development?

  • What measures can enhance pragmatic competence in the classroom?

Significance of the Study

The findings will help improve teaching methodologies and support the preservation of cultural language practices (Nwankwo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to primary school children in Enugu and does not extend to secondary or higher education.
